Born in in Madison, Wisconsin, Alice Sebold grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in a family that loved books. She attended Syracuse University, where she experienced a life-changing event at the end of her freshman year. Walking back to her dorm one night, Sebold was attacked and brutally raped. It would take her more than fifteen years to write about this horrific event.
